SpectraLux LLC was formed in Michigan in 2024, out of university research into near-range wireless communications. The prompt was simple: as the Internet of Cars grows larger and more sophisticated, how can we mitigate the effects of excessive network traffic in highly congested areas? The 75 MHz-wide Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) band for Intelligent Traffic Systems was thought to be insufficient for supporting the volume of data traffic anticipated, and the visible spectrum was judged to be a potential cure. That 75 MHz band has since been shortened to just 30 MHz, making the potential problem all the more relevant.

After years of research and development, the result is a light-based line-of-sight communications physical layer that is capable of transmitting data in direct sunlight over distances of up to 750 feet through an automotive-grade LED high beam. Along the way, an array of new potential applications has been discovered, leveraging this cutting-edge new technology’s ability to transmit highly directional signals with no radio signature and near-zero risk of intersymbol interference, in a way that is imperceptible to the human eye. SpectraLux LLC was formed to commercialize this technology, helping to further development and manufacturing, and to identify new areas for deployment.
